KiwiSaver contribution rates explained

9 min read

What are the KiwiSaver contribution rates?

Since 1 April 2026 the default KiwiSaver contribution rate is 3.5% of your before-tax pay, rising to 4% from 1 April 2028. You can also choose to put in 4%, 6%, 8% or 10%. Your employer contributes on top, and the government adds its share if you qualify.

The rates you can choose

Your contribution comes straight out of your pay before you see it. The options are the 3.5% default, or 4%, 6%, 8% or 10%. If money is tight you can apply to stay at 3% for up to 12 months at a time, then renew it before you are moved up.

What your employer adds

If you are contributing from your wages, your employer must contribute too, currently at the same 3.5% default rate (rising to 4% in 2028), before employer tax. That is extra pay working for your retirement, so contributing enough to get the full employer amount matters.

The government contribution on top

On top of that, the government adds up to $260.72 a year if you contribute at least $1,042.86 between 1 July and 30 June, and your income is $180,000 or less (Inland Revenue). The detail is in the KiwiSaver government contribution.

How to change your rate
